No dye was used to create this egg, just vinegar slowly dissolving the brown eggshell. The end result is five different shades of brown, cream and white to complete the design. When I first started writing pysanky, I began reading about the history of the tradition. My favorite fact is that not only were painted eggs given as gifts to family and friends, but they were shared back with the chickens as thanks and to encourage laying.
